Strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake hits Turkey, collapses buildings (VIDEO)

Update: As of 11 pm ET, it has been reported that at least 31 people have been killed and the death toll is expected to rise.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey on Sunday night (early Monday morning local time), causing buildings to collapse.

People are also trapped under collapsed buildings and rubble in northern Syria.

The earthquake struck 20 miles from Gaziantep.

A 6.7 aftershock hit a few minutes later.

The AP reported:

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook southeastern Turkey early Monday, followed by another strong tremor. It was felt in several provinces in the region and several buildings collapsed, reports said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital. It was about 26 kilometers (16 mi) from Nurdagi town.

It was centered at a depth of 18 kilometers (11 mi), according to the US Geological Survey. A strong 6.7 tremor rumbled about 10 minutes later.

Turkey’s disaster and emergency management agency, AFAD, said the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4 and was centered in the town of Pazarsik in Kahramanmaras province.

Several buildings collapsed in Malatya, Diyarbakır and Malatya provinces, Haberturk television reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
