Lawmakers have demanded Hunter Biden hand over documents on foreign business deals

House oversight Republicans continued their investigation into Hunter Biden on Thursday, calling for the handover of documents allegedly showing illegal business dealings by the president’s son and his associates.

The committee demanded Hunter Biden, James Biden and Eric Schwerin turn over documents related to their foreign dealings. Critics charged that Hunter used his father’s political influence to secure foreign deals that could compromise the president.

“The American people deserve transparency and accountability regarding the influence of the Biden family,” said Rep. James Comer, R-K, who chairs the oversight committee. “The Oversight Committee is committed to exposing waste, fraud and abuse at the highest levels of our government.”

The committee is particularly interested in how much President Joe Biden was involved in the transaction, or at least what he was aware of, arguing that if foreign companies knew about any wrongdoing, it could compromise national security.

Oversight Republicans vowed to make the investigation one of their top concerns after winning the majority in November.

Hunter is currently under federal investigation by the US Department of Justice.

“The evidence obtained in our investigation reveals that the Biden family’s business model is built on Joe Biden’s political career and connections,” Comer said. “Members of the Biden family tried to sell access to people around the world, including those linked to the Chinese Communist Party, to enrich themselves at the expense of American interests. If President Biden compromises through deals with foreign adversaries and they influence his decision-making, it is a threat to national security.

The Hunter investigation has many legal avenues and opportunities to prosecute potential tax violations and entrap foreigners with false statements to federal law enforcement. Politically, Hunter’s investigation complicates Biden’s 2024 bid, especially now that the president faces his own investigation into a trove of classified documents in his possession from his time in the Obama administration.

Hunter has until February 22 to respond to the committee’s letter. The committee is considering new ethics legislation to expressly prohibit certain elements of Hunter’s conduct.

“The evidence shows that you engaged in foreign business dealings with individuals who were affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party and received significant amounts of money from foreign companies without providing any known legitimate services,” the committee’s letter to Hunter said. “The committee is investigating President Biden’s knowledge and role in these foreign business deals to assess whether he compromised our national security at the expense of the American people. The financial conduct of you and your associates raises significant ethics and national security concerns.”
