WATCH: Kelly Vlahos warns America’s focus on Ukraine makes it sensitive

Political Insider’s Brett Smith sat down with Kelly Vlahos, editorial director of Responsible Statecraft, to discuss the possibility of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia turning from a ‘cold war to a hot war’ and whether or not it could spell disaster for the United States. World War with China.

Vlahos opined that a series of red lines drawn by the Biden administration in Ukraine have been continuously crossed after the president pledged to do “whatever it takes to help Ukraine in its war.”

“I don’t want there to be any tension, but I think that this thing could grind to a halt, destroy Ukraine because they have limited resources – much more limited than Russia,” he explained.

“But at the same time, we’re kind of pushing them to keep going.”

Vlahos worries that when the media puts a good spin on the war with Russia, we will wake up one day and realize that “the country (Ukraine) is destroyed.”

“In typical American fashion (we) will probably just walk away, pay and then move on to the next front which will be China,” he said. “I’m just afraid we’re headed in that direction.”

Vlahos warns of what could happen if we go to war with China

Kelly Vlahos, a senior adviser at the Quincy Institute, warned that any consideration of sending warplanes to Ukraine, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested, would “increase the war.”

He noted how the United States has already allocated $113 billion in American taxpayer money and recently sent 31 Abrams M1 tanks to aid in the war, not to mention the intellectual and emotional capital to drag out the conflict.

Biden himself once asserted that tanks with American military personnel meant “World War III.”

“We’re training troops in Germany, we’re sending a lot of military hardware there, we’re spending a lot of money,” Vlahos warned.

If you suddenly turn your attention to China, which seems to have escalated the issue by sending at least one spy balloon over American airspace in the past few weeks, “they’re going to be a much bigger threat.”

War with China will be a ‘different kettle of fish’

Vlahos described any escalation with China as a “different kettle of fish” altogether.

“They will be a much bigger threat,” he warns. “And with all the war gaming that’s been done here in Washington, the situation between the U.S. and China over Taiwan, we’ve lost big time.”

The Political Insider reported on recent gaming where China would ultimately fail to secure Taiwan in the event of a war, but the cost to America and its allies would be high.

“Either we lose outright or … everybody loses,” Vlahos relayed. “I mean, just tons of ships sunk, people died.”

“These games have been going on for years and they have had equally dark conclusions.”

Vlahos noted that many people in Washington like to beat the drum of war but few realize that if the United States is dragged into a world war, fighting both Russia and, perhaps even more, China.

“Yes, a heated war with China – it’s terrible,” he said. “It’s scarier to me than when I was a kid in the 80s under threat of mutual assured destruction with the USSR.”

“China is a whole different deal.”
