The state of Illinois plans to house hundreds of illegal immigrants shipped from Texas at a shuttered K-Mart store on Chicago’s South Side.
Not everyone is happy with the idea.
Some activists fear it won’t provide enough privacy for people living there. Some local residents don’t like the idea of population growth on the south side of the city.

State plans to close Southwest Side Kmart store at a shelter for immigrants
Elected officials and community groups are asking the state of Illinois to slow down the way a shuttered West Lawn Kmart at 71st and Pulaski could soon house hundreds of immigrants from Texas to Chicago.
“We’re not just looking here, it’s a building with four walls and that’s it. It’s a roof over your head.’ No,” said state Rep. Angie Guerrero-Cuellar (D-22).
Guerrero-Cuella expressed concern about the timeline.
“How quickly do you want to turn it into a shelter where you’re talking about creating rooms and bathrooms and a kitchen area that will be used for privacy,” Guerrero-Cuellar said.
The property is 96,268 square feet, according to a past presentation about the development. It was among a group of Kmart stores across the country that closed in 2016, according to media reports at the time…
Guerrero-Cuellar said the community needs time to fully understand what’s going on and develop an adequate safety plan.
“I want to make sure residents understand what the timeline is going to be,” Guerrero-Cuellar said. “Is it going to be a short-term shelter? A permanent shelter? How long will they be here?”

Maybe the Biden administration should have come up with a plan before allowing millions of people to flow across the southern border, or not let it happen in the first place.
