Boston mayor’s finance director accused of laundering money in prison drug smuggling scheme

Freda Brasfield, the director of administration and finance in Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s office, was indicted Friday on charges of laundering money in an alleged prison drug smuggling scheme.

Brasfield, a longtime Boston Democratic political activist and community organizer, appeared in Woburn Superior Court along with two co-defendants, Jaime Liberty and Jaylin Rivera, who both face drug trafficking conspiracy charges at MCI Shirley.

Brasfield, who is represented by Boston attorney David Meyer, entered pleas of not guilty to one count of money laundering and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Brasfield, Liberty and Rivera were released on personal recognizance.

A grand jury indicted Freda Brassfield on Dec. 15, 2022, according to records on file in Woburn Superior Court.

Prosecutors alleged that the smuggling scheme extended to January 2021 and involved a conspiracy to smuggle synthetic cannabinoids known as K2 and Spice to MCI Shirley. Prosecutors said it involved four inmates, including Brasfield’s nephew, and five “non-inmate relations or significant others,” including Freda Brasfield.

According to this report, he was charged in December but sentenced this week. What gives?

Shocking corruption.
