Elderly woman shoots dead armed robber in Florida

An elderly woman shot and killed an armed robber in Florida early Wednesday morning.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the unnamed 67-year-old woman was killed by a single shot after Reginald Best, 64, entered her home.

The woman told law enforcement she heard someone fiddling with her front door handle around 3 a.m.

Thinking it might be her husband, the woman opened the door. At this point, she says that Best forced her way inside.

News Channel 8 reports that “she asked Best to leave her home multiple times. She told deputies Best had both hands up and she saw he had a gun in his hand.

Fearing what would happen next, the woman fired a shot and called the police.

“Prior to the shooting, deputies said they received several erratic calls from Best and another woman at 172 Silver Lake Drive,” Channel 8 reported. “During one call, Best told dispatchers that he was hiding from his neighbors and that orange men were standing outside his house. In a call from another woman, she told dispatchers that Best jumped out the window with a gun and ran down the street. Deputies said they were on their way to a call when shots were fired.”

Putnam County Sheriff HD “Gator” DeLoach told the station the case is a “perfect example” of why he supports the Second Amendment.

“This call for service is a perfect example of why I continue to support and fight for the firearms rights of law-abiding residents every day,” DeLoach said. “All firearms owners have a responsibility not only to themselves, but also to their families, to maintain proficiency with guns, as our victim here today clearly has.”

“Had he not had the foresight to arm himself, the consequences could have been more serious,” the sheriff continued. “It is unfortunate that Best was struggling with some seemingly deep issues and posed a serious threat to the victim and her family. He had every right to defend himself and I am grateful that his decisive action stopped the threat, and eliminated the risk of further loss of life, making his entire neighborhood safer.”
