21-year-old Jackson State football player revived after cardiac arrest

100 percent fed up – A 21-year-old Jackson State football player had to be resuscitated after suffering a heart attack Wednesday morning.

Kasim Vols, a 2022 Jackson State defensive lineman, went to Mississippi Medical Center Tuesday night with abdominal pain. On Wednesday morning, he suffered a cardiac arrest and had to be put on a ventilator.

He underwent surgery that afternoon. As of Thursday night, Vols was reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Vols’ father, William, reported on the doctor’s explanation for his son’s abdominal pain before the cardiac arrest. He said, “What the doctors think is what was causing Kasem’s stomach pain when his heart failed. His liver was suffering as fluid built up with toxins in his liver, kidneys and blood. All these toxins were building up in his bloodstream, and his heart couldn’t work properly, and the machine was being used to clean the blood and toxins.”

William posted updates on his son’s condition via Twitter.

On Thursday morning, William used his son’s Twitter account to announce that Vols was “progressing” after an emergency procedure. He added that doctors have gradually reduced his medication and “machine input” which he adds “so his organs can rest and not work so hard.”

He also reported that doctors “will taper off the breathing medication so he can wake up on his own, but it may be up to the fourth day on the machine.”

The Vols’ heart attack comes just six weeks after the unusual cardiac arrest of 24-year-old NFL player Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest on the field during a Monday Night Football game.
